The Taste of Sunshine on a Winter's Day

I love baking. It feels like alchemy, combining some rather ordinary ingredients and creating something beautiful and a treat for the senses. The smell emanating from the kitchen when your cake is just moments from being done. Cutting the first slice and enjoying a few minutes out of your day whilst you savour each mouthful.

I loved baking so much that I turned it into a business. I started supplying a couple of well-known delis and making great big, time consuming, bespoke cakes. My house was taken over by cake decorating supplies and a cake tin collection that Mary Berry would be proud of. As time went on, the enjoyment I got from baking was lost and it became a drudge. I learnt the hard way that turning a hobby into a business isn’t always a good idea!

Baking takes over the kitchen

Fast forward a few years and I’m now the proud owner of this beautiful boutique - and I’ve regained my love of baking again. A major requirement for The Mantique was to make sure it was a welcoming and relaxing place to visit and shop so there is always coffee and a slice of homemade cake on offer. I want my customers to know that they can get the best cake in Winchester from The Mantique and it’s all part of offering an exceptional shopping experience.

Today I have a really delicious cake in the shop, it’s a new recipe that I tried for the first time last night and I’m so glad I did, it’s amazing! The cake is a Dan Lepard recipe (he’s my baking hero!), a blood orange, ginger and walnut cake. Each slice tastes like a little piece of sunshine on a winter’s day, so it must be good for you…
